NORTH Leverton will fulfil the dream of every footballer, young and old, when they step out at the hallowed Wembley Stadium this weekend.
The youngsters won the Midland Counties Seven-a-side Championship last month, and qualified for the English Schools FA’s National Finals which will take place before the England versus France Schoolboy International on Saturday.

And the team’s proud coach Jack Tarr said the team are ready for their big day.

“There will be no special preparations football-wise as the boys have been together for two years, know their jobs and know each other well,” he said.

“We have a good all-round team with a good balance of left and right-sided players who play excellent passing football.”

“They will not be overawed once they get on the field but can expect to meet stronger opposition than they have met so far.”

“They will almost certainly be the smallest school there – there’s only just over 80 pupils on roll, including girls and infants.”

Jack stated that the team has a determinationn to win the finals, but will also be proud to play in the famous stadium.

“Obviously we want to win – but win or lose the boys are in for an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives,” he said. “Did you know that Pele in his prime never played at Wembley?”

As for himself Jack, who is a highly experienced coach and has previously won the National and British titles with Clarborough, said he will also feel proud when he strides out on to the hallowed turf.

“I have often led boys out at Wembley as part of my role with the English Schools Football Association, but never my own team so there will be a lot of pride involved on the day,” he said.

“I won this tournament with Clarborough in 2001 but there was no Wembley then and the final was played at Lilleshall with a British final in Newport.”

The team will travel to Watford FC’s training ground on Friday, where there will be a round robin between the four qualifying schools to determine the order of play at Wembley.

The Leverton team are staying overnight at the Wembley Travelodge, ready to be taken into the ground on Saturday morning. There will be about 80 parents and friends travelling to see the match.

To reach the Wembley final, the boys won a tournament that included teams representing Northamptonshire, Worcestershire, Humberside, Shropshire and Leicestershire.

Jack was quick to point out that the Leverton success was also a tribute to the work of headteacher Kevin Bacon, who has encouraged, trained and helped develop the boys from an early age.

He added: “This will be a day when the headmaster, Kevin Bacon, should be really proud.”

“He works damned hard to promote the game in the school and has created a football culture. This could never have happened without him.”
