A BRACE from defender Ben Chambers ensured Retford's promotion bid stayed on track, after a first-half scare in Kidsgrove on Saturday.
Retford took the lead in the 23rd minute when a corner was floated in deep by Ryan Hindley, home 'keeper James Coates stretched but couldn't make contact and Chambers ran in at the far post to nod United into the lead.
Retford almost increased their lead when Ollie Chappell and Ian Farmery both had chances, but Coates was level with them to hold onto the ball.
The second goal did come however after 34 minutes.
Mick Goddard made a run from his own half and played the ball into the feet of the oncoming Steve Owens who skipped the Kidsgrove challenges and made no mistake as he shot past Coates.
Kidsgrove fought back and five minutes later pulled a goal back through Aiden Matranga's effort, as he made contact with a cross from the left to fire past Ross Turner from 12 yards out.
Kidsgrove were back on level terms almost on the stroke of half-time.

A free-kick conceded by Stuart Ludlam was converted quickly by Michael Lennon as Turner was still organising his wall.
Retford's final chance of the half fell to Mick Godber. He tried to shoot into an empty net after Goddard had drawn Coates to the edge of his box.
He cut the ball back to Godber and the striker's shot was inches wide of the post.
Both teams created chances and tested the 'keepers in the second half, but it was Retford who took control with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Hindley floated in the ball and Chambers rose above everyone to power his header over the outstretched arm of Coates and into the net.
Kidsgrove tried to get back on level terms, but a corner in the final few minutes was straight at Turner who plucked the ball from the air.
The final effort fell to Hindley when played through by Godber, but his shot was wide.
An entertaining game with United showing their resolve to hang on for victory.
