RETFORD United moved another three points closer to promotion with a professional performance in the victory over Gresley.

They are now eight points clear after this victory was coupled with a defeat for second-placed Cammell Laird.

United got off to the perfect start when a second-minute corner floated in by Ryan Hindley was powered towards goal from the head of Dan White and Mick Godber was in a good position to nod the ball past the 'keeper.

Gresley almost had an instant reply as Tony Hemmings broke forward and managed to get into the Retford area; his close-range effort flashing past the far post.

White met another Hindley corner but the Gresley defence were alert to clear the effort off the line.

Another goal was looking more likely for United as the game wore on, and shortly after spurning two golden opportunities, Godber played a weighted ball into the oncoming Steve Owens and after a few paces he unleashed a shot that was goalbound as soon as it left his foot.

It was a good performance from United in a game made difficult by the windy conditions.

United now have two tricky away trips starting with the visit to Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday and then Nantwich Town on Tuesday evening (11th).

Coaches are available for both games leaving Cannon Park at 11am for Kidsgrove and 4.30pm for Nantwich. Places can be booked by calling 07904 905871.
