DIVISION Two winners New Manton pulled off a surprise win in the Champion of Champions Final for the Worksop Guardian Shield to put their name on the trophy for only the second time in the trophy's 85 years and for the first time for 19 years.
After Sir Edmund Hillary's semi-final defeat of the seemingly unstoppable St Anne's, most thought that they would go on to take the title.
Manton coaches Becky Holdsworth and Ian Davies had other ideas however, and so had their boys.
With Hill
ary always looking uncomfortable when defending corners, it was a headed own goal that first put Manton in front.
Hillary retaliated with a cracking shot from John Ellis but a handball on the line from another corner enabled Jack Taylor to coolly restore the Manton lead from the penalty spot.
The second half onslaught from Hillary never materialised, and with Matthew Davies dominating the midfield, Manton grew in stature and a another fine shot from Jack Taylor in stoppage time made in 3-1.
North Leverton, County Small Schools Champions, clinched the Bassetlaw Small Schools Champion of Champions title for the fifth consecutive year with a win over Gamston.
Gamston worked hard to match the passing skills of their opponents but fell behind after two unfortunate slip-ups led to goals from Connor Payne and Toby Sims.
With Owen Gamble as provider in chief Connor Payne took his tally to three while Joe Candlin hit an unstoppable consolation goal in the game's dying seconds to make it 4-1.
North Leverton's unprecedented success is once again a tribute to headteacher Kevin Bacon's development of the boys from an early age and while presenting the trophy Jack Tarr, the Bassetlaw Chairman, observed that every member of the winning squad was available next year.
Bassetlaw Boys and Girls had a rare day when all four squads finished on the losing side.
The Boys A squad matched the 142–school City of Leeds Association for large parts of the game but eventually fell to three second-half goals while the B squad fell heavily to a Leeds B squad whose season had included the scalps of both City of Sheffield and City of Hull A squads.
Let down by two late withdrawals, the Girls squads were unable to reproduce the form in the County Seven-a-side Championship that helped them take the title earlier in the season although manager Mary Paton was full of praise for the youngest member of the squad, Megan Edwards and debutante, Chloe Hale.
The district teams' season finishes this week with the final of the Boys' County Cup when the following squad has been named by manager Alan Pressley: Matthew Bryce (Carr Hill); Matthew Dryden (Beckingham); Matthew Davies (New Manton); Matthew Templeton (Holy Family); Keir Stockdale (Prospect Hill); Ross Wicks, Harry Browne (St John's); Jordan Harrison (St Joseph's); Adam Boyfield (Norbridge);Toby Sims (North Leverton); John Ellis, Simon Hyland (Sir Edmund Hillary);Jordan Camm, James Hazlehurst (St Augustine's); Calum Waring (Clarborough).
