THERE were some aching legs after last Sunday's Retford Wheelers club run into the Peak District.
Only 13 riders were able to take up the challenge of more than 100 miles over some of the highest climbs that Derbyshire has to offer.
Taking a route through to Eckington, over Marsh Lane and on to Apperknowle, the group progressed through Holmesf
ield and Owler Bar before the 'white knuckle' descent into Hathersage.
From here, the group decided to continue on to Castleton to tackle the awesome ascent of Winnats Pass.
The easier climb of Mam Tor followed with a fast descent into Edale and back to Hathersage for much needed sustenance.
The riders, having already clocked up 60 miles, made their return journey via Owler Bar to Barlow and Chesterfield before picking up the outward route back into Worksop and Retford.
On the race scene, time trial specialist Tony Keyworth recorded a lifetime best of 1 hour 1 minute 12 seconds for 25 miles in the Melton Olympic event on the Long Bennington course.
This was a well deserved result for the 62-year-old Manton rider, who has prepared meticulously for his comeback season after more than 40 years out of the sport.
Riding in the same event, Paul Austin recorded 58 minutes 54 seconds which was, for him, a season's best result.
Worksop teenager Sam Kirby rode in the Hull City Road Club 80km road race over a hilly course. He finished in the top 30 of a classy field.
Alan Hazard competed in the Burton and District 100 mile time trial, returning a respectable 4 hours 25 minutes 12 seconds which, subject to confirmation, is a club record.
The mid-season of the Forest Town Track League shows Sam Kirby and Alan Hazard tying in first place with 57 points, Paul Austin is in third place with 53 points, and Graeme Waters is in 10th with 27 points.
In the Junior League Matt Waters holds an unassailable lead over his contempories with 90 points.
