A mother and daughter have appeared in court after a mobile phone was stolen from a supermarket.

Sarah Anne Catley, 36, and Cara May Webster, 19, both of Lime Tree Avenue, Carlton-in-Lindrick appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after the HTC phone had been accidentally left by a customer near to the till at the village’s Co-op.

The court was told that staff were about to put the phone in to lost property when Catley, who had been stood waiting in the queue behind, picked it up, put it in a carrier bag and walked out of the shop.

Webster did not know about the theft until they got to the car park.

The theft was backed up by CCTV footage, but it was not shown in court after Catley admitted to police that she had taken it.

She admitted a charge of theft, while Webster admitted handling stolen goods.

Catley was fined £80 and made to pay £285 costs, while Webster was handed a community order.
