INDEPENDENT traders in Retford have launched a new leaflet to publicise their businesses.
Twenty-six traders are listed in the directory, which was the brainchild of Angela Meads, who owns the independent bookshop Bookworm with her husband Paul.
The leaflet was launched during Independent Booksellers’ Week and is now available at all the busineses involved, as well as at tourist information centres and other outlets like the library.
Mr Meads said: “We’ve produced the leaflet so that visitors to the town know where they can get a good deal.”
“We have all contributed to funding it, we are sticking together to promote it ourselves and try to persuade people to stay local rather than having a trip out to Meadowhall.”
Mr Meads said Retford had quite a high proportion of independent retailers which attracted shoppers from larger towns like Scunthorpe and Doncaster.
He said: “People are prepared to travel long distances because we’re different.”
“People perceive that the cost is going to be higher at an independent trader but there are always deals to be had and a better quality of service.”
“The people are more involved in the business and its future because they have more invested in it.”
Mr Meads said it was important to support local independent local traders because otherwise all high streets would look exactly the same.
