A Worksop park has been named as one of the best in the UK.

The Canch has received a prestigious Green Flag Award for the third year running.

The award, presented by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is a mark of quality and recognises the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, Councillor Julie Leigh, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the third successive year from Keep Britain Tidy.

“This Award recognises and highlights that people in Worksop are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality and I know that the town is immensely proud of the park.

“Retaining Green Flag status for The Canch is testament to the hard work and dedication of our Parks and Open Spaces team, along with our Grounds Maintenance staff and our civic partners in Worksop.”

The Green Flag Award celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year and The Canch is among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that have received this prestigious award for 2016.

This is including Kings Park in Retford which has received the Green Flag Award since 2008.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards.

“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

The Canch Park consists of two distinct areas. Memorial Gardens on the South bank of the River Ryton was opened by King George V in 1928 in remembrance of the men of Worksop who died in the First World War.

On the North side of the Ryton there is an area for active recreation with a Skate Park, Adizone outdoor gym, a multi-use games area and the extremely popular fountain splash pool.
