The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership has scooped a top award for its work through the Lifewise Centre in Hellaby.

The annual Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognise achievements and innovations which improve safety.

The award was presented to Chief Superintendent Keith Lumley, chair of the partnership, and Superintendent Eddie Murphy, head of the force’s Community Safety Department based at Lifewise at the centre on Monday.

Ch Supt Lumley said: “It is an honour that our work and commitment to safety on the roads has been recognised by the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards.”

The visit to the centre included a hard-hitting performance on the Lifewise set showing the aftermath and consequences of a fatal road crash.

The Lifewise Centre delivers a range of programmes and activities promoting making good decisions and road safety.

They target groups of young drivers aged from 17 to 24, people driving for work, motorcyclists, pedal cyclists, mobility scooter users, elderly drivers and pedestrians.

Crucial Crew is the centre’s flagship personal programme aimed 10 and 11-year-olds. Through the Lifewise set, children get the knowledge, skills and strategies to make the right choices to keep themselves safe. Crucial Crew is offered to all schools in South Yorkshire and in the last academic year over 96 per cent took part.

The Centre has also hosted some 450 other events including training for Special Constables and Paramedics, family open days and cycle training.

Supt Eddie Murphy added: “I am really pleased that the hard work and efforts of everyone involved in activity at the Centre and our innovative approach to addressing safety issues have been acknowledged with this prestigious award.”
