The first low level snowfall of the winter is expected as early as next week, as temperatures are set to fall and bitter winds blow into Britain.

Forecasters at the Met Office warned of ‘significant snow accumulations’ over higher ground, as well as in non-mountainous northern areas.

By Tuesday, wintry showers are expected to bring a combination of rain, sleet and snow.

Temperatures are predicted to rise barely above freezing during day time hours.

Overnight temperatures will feel as cold as minus five degrees Celsius in parts of the north, forecasters said.
