Two “British folk icons” are set to share the stage at a sold-out Doncaster show.

The town’s Roots Music Club is preparing to welcome Martin Simpson and Martin Carthy.

A club spokesman said: “This is unlikely to ever be repeated.

“Martin Simpson, representing the pinnacle of folk, guitar, banjo and song, appearing on the same bill as Martin Carthy, our most knowledgeable, unique and significant carrier of folk song in the UK, possibly the world.

“There is no doubt that after 45 years as a professional musician Simpson is, right now, better than ever.

“Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling.

“There is no-one who has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than Simpson.

“The impeccable virtuoso guitarist Martin Carthy joins forces with Simpson for an unforgettable evening.

“Carthy has remained one of the most influential figures in British traditional music. He performs with a distinctive style marked by theuse of alternative tunings and a strongly percussive picking style with emphasis on the melody.

“There is little more to be said except our young support artist James Haigh, from Rotherham, may well be replacing these two British folk icons in 25 years’ time.”
