READER LETTER: Fly-tipping - Old mattress was dumped on my drive

You expect fly-tipping to be on a shady lane, or some out of the way place, but not on your own drive.

Recently I was attending to my 90-year-old mother and got a call from my partner to see if I or my son had ordered a mattress and had it delivered. That was a resounding ‘no.’

My partner had seen a white van draw up on the street, nothing wrong with that he thought. However it looked like he had stopped outside my drive. My partner ran out as quick as possible, but he was in the van, which I might add said ‘beds’ on the side, and was gone in a flash, leaving a double mattress leaning up against my garage door. When I got home I checked the mattress, which was definitely an old one.

So the guy had dumped that on my drive, possibly because the person he had sold the new mattress to had asked for the old one to be taken away because it costs £12.50 for the council to pick it up.

Or it was his own, and he didn’t want to pay.

I had an old one picked up three weeks ago, and paid the price, now I have had to pay again to get rid of some one else’s garbage, so that is now £25, marvellous.

I am completely disgusted by this act of trespass on my property to dump someone’s rubbish. I complained to the police who gave me an incident number, and to the council, nothing can be done, we didn’t get a registration number, so you just have to suck it up.

This is just a warning to people to be vigilant. I am totally disgusted with humanity.

Extremely disenchanted with the whole system.
