A long running saga over a Worksop supermarket which was meant to be open to shoppers by now, but is not yet built, looks set to continue.

Tesco’s plans for a huge superstore to replace its dated Gateford Road supermarket have been dealt another blow.

Wranglings over footpaths across the development site between Carlton Road, Blyth Road and South Parade will now go to a planning inquiry.

As things stand, construction work can not begin because the superstore would cut off two footpaths.

Tesco applied to Bassetlaw Council to divert these routes around the store perimeter.

But ‘unresolvable’ objections were raised during public consultation.

A Bassetlaw Council spokesman confirmed the matter would be referred to the Secretary of State for a decision.

Eddie Brennan from Notts County Council’s countryside access team said the issue was discussed at a meeting last week between Tesco and the county and district councils. He said: “Tesco have now gone away to consider their options.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “In order to build our store we need permission from the Secretary of State to divert a footpath that currently runs through the middle of the site. We look forward to receiving a decision in due course.”
