Family comes first for 18-year-old Shannon Brooks who was awarded the Guardian Rose by her nan this week.

The sports-mad teen from Carlton has been a rock for her grandparents recently, despite being lumbered with a sporting injury

Shannon, who lives with parents Craig and Dawn and older brother Arran in Le Brun Square, is in her first year at Leeds Metropolitan University.

She is studying towards a degree in sports and exercise therapy and hopes to have her own physio studio in the future.

Shannon started playing football while she was still at primary school and now she plays for Rotherham United Ladies FC.

A few years ago, she and brother Arran were even named world champions in karate, and also held the British and Eurasian titles.

“I started out doing ballet when I was really little but I preferred watching my brother and his friends kicking the football about and soon joined in,” said Shannon.

Nan Rosaline said: “I’m so proud of her. She always succeeds at whatever she does and nothing gets the better of her. She’s as tough as they come.”

“I don’t call her Shannon, I call her Shin Pad.”

Even a sprained knee ligament sustained while playing football couldn’t put Shannon out of action.

She said: “I thought I was alright so I got in the car after the match and went to fetch my nan from hospital where I’d dropped her off. Later I had to have an operation on it.”

Nan Rosaline, of Langold, said: “I couldn’t think of a better way to thank Shannon than giving her the Guardian Rose.”

“Her grandad has been very poorly and she has driven me to and from hospital to see him, as well as her bar job and football.”

“I am disabled and she looks after me, cooking and doing jobs around the house. She never lets us down. She’s my shining star.”

Said Shannon said she was ‘really happy’ to get the rose. “I would do anything for these guys,” she said.
