Labour councillors will join forces on Saturday 16th March to protest against the ‘bedroom tax’.

District councillors and Bassetlaw Labour party members will march through town starting at Worksop Town Hall at 10am.

Bassetlaw Council leader Coun Simon Greaves said the march would be the first in a series of public protest events over the cuts to housing benefit.

“The march will also see the launch of a local petition calling upon the Government to ‘Axe the Bedroom Tax’ where members of the public will be able to sign the petition,” he said.

“The support of local people is vital to send a clear message to Government about this terrible policy that not only hits those on the lowest incomes hardest but also hits the young, the vulnerable and the elderly.”

The move comes as the Government made a partial U-turn to exempt foster carers and parents of teenage armed forces personnel from the charge - just three weeks before it is due to come into force.
