The Cathedrals Express steam train passes through Retford Train Station - VIDEO

Retford residents were able to join The Cathedrals Express steam train from their local station to take a magical day trip to Scarborough last Saturday.

The rostered locomotive for this trip was the 60163 Tornado - the newest and most talked about locomotive on the mainline.

It was built at a cost of over £3m and only completed a few years ago but has already found fame and many enthusiastic supporters including Jeremy Clarkson who raced it from London to Edinburgh on a memorable episode of BBC’s Top Gear.

The impressive locomotive also recently hauled The Royal Train to Alnwick earlier this month.

Passengers who joined the train at Retford had four different travel options to choose from - two full dining options (Pullman Style and Premier Dining), First Class and Premium Standard.

Pullman Style passengers were seated in restored 1950s wood-panelled carriages and comfortable seats with individual table lamps and curtains at the window.

Welcome glasses of champagne accompanied the delicious brunch on the outward journey.

On the return, passengers were welcomed on board with canapés before being served a two-course meal with a half bottle of wine per person.

Marcus Robertson, chairman of The Cathedrals Express, said it is always really exciting to bring a steam train to the new route.

“The interest and enthusiasm from passengers to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a steam train as it thunders through the countryside at speeds of up to 75mph is wonderful,” he said.

“And the idea of travelling in style, being looked after by our friendly and efficient staff while enjoying superb food and drink, just seems to strike a chord with the public.”
