Shirebrook road protest

RESIDENTS and community leaders are calling for improvements to be made to a dangerous privately-owned road in Shirebrook.

Christine Plant, who has lived on Field Road for 20 years, is leading the campaign for work to be carried out on a road which runs between her home and Wood Lane.

The route, which is riddled with deep pot holes, crumbling limestone kerbs and loose gravel, belongs to listed residential landlord Grainger plc.

Other fed-up residents are backing Mrs Plant's call for the road to be improved by Grainger plc sufficiently for Derbyshire County Council to adopt the land.

And after being contacted by Chad this week, bosses at the firm said they would be carrying out work on the road next month.

Mrs Plant said: "The road has been in a terrible state the whole time that I have lived here and it is getting worse.

"In the past three years I have increased my efforts to get Grainger plc to improve the road due to my husband's health.

"He suffers with chronic degenerative discs in his lower back so any jolting causes him excruciating pain.

"Every time I take him along the road he actually cries out in pain because the road surface is so uneven."

And Mrs Plant says it's not just her husband who is suffering due to the poor state of the road.

"The road is used by a lot of people in the community including a number of elderly residents who use mobility scooters," she said.

"They have difficulty along the road due to the pot holes and uneven surface, but even someone who is steady on their feet could easily fall over on the road."

Mrs Plant says although Granger plc has sent out staff to look at the road on three occasions, they have done nothing at all so far to improve it.

"It would cost around 40,000 to bring the road up to a standard at which the county council could adopt it. I can't see how this would be a problem to a multi-million pound company like Grainger plc.

"The company also owns land at the back of my property which has become a dumping ground for fly-tipping and is infested with rats."

Those who have backed Mrs Plant's campaign include Derbyshire county councillor Marian Stockdale; Bolsover district councillor Brian Murray-Carr; John Sherwood, environmental health residential manager at Bolsover District Council and Bolsover MP Dennis Skinner.

A spokesman for Grainger plc said: "Grainger plc places great importance on maintaining good relations with our tenants and local communities.

"We are pleased to confirm that after very productive discussions with Bolsover District Council and with their financial assistance, we are now obtaining estimates for the necessary repairs to the road and expect to carry these out during April."
