Retford man part of aid mission
A RETFORD man is helping hundreds of Eyptians whose homes have been destroyed by flash floods.
Adrian Sumner, 62, is a volunteer for international disaster relief charity ShelterBox, which is sending emergency shelter to southern Egypt.
Disaster struck three weeks ago when flash floods destroyed hundreds of homes in the Sinai Peninsula.
The torrential rains have washed away mud brick houses, forcing scores of families out of their homes.
ShelterBox has since flown 224 boxes of prepositioned aid from Dubai to the Egyptian city of Aswan.
The aid boxes have been met by Adrian and fellow ShelterBox member Lizzy Treglown, from Bristol.
Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and essential equipment, such as blankets, mosquito nets and stoves, to use while they are displaced or homeless.
Speaking before he left for Eygpt, Adrian said: ”We have enough equipment to help 2,220 people.”
”We know very little about the lay of the land, but we have had some updates from the Red Cross.”
”On this occassion we are three weeks down the road since it happened. What we are going to see is all the houses destroyed and so the people really need the supplies we are bringing in.”
Adrian flew out to Egypt last week, and is scheduled to stay for three weeks.
Jessica Stanton, ShelterBox’s operations co-ordinator, said: ”The floods have left hundreds of homes totally destroyed and submerged many others.”
”Conditions are desperate, with many families sleeping in the open. Our team on the ground will do all they can to deliver emergency shelter to those in the greatest need.”
The charity is also currently helping those caught up in the Haiti earthquake.
