Retford Scouts and Guides Gala - see our full photo gallery

RETFORD'S annual Scouts and Guides Gala was blessed with idyllic summer sunshine

"When you are organising an event like this, you pray for good weather, but you are always a little nervous," said Retford Scouts and Guides spokesman, Gillian Wilkinson.

"As it turned out there was no need to worry, we had a great day," she added.

The gala, which took place in scouting's centenary year, followed a tested formula.

After gathering on the common, the parade led by the scout's own band made its way to King's Park via Grove Street and Bridgegate.

They then extended a welcome to anyone and everyone.

And as it turned out that welcome was taken up by hundreds of people of all ages – some of them wanting to see what scouting was all about and others who just wanted a relaxing afternoon in the sunshine.

VIPs to the gala this year included Bassetlaw Council chairman, Wendy Quigley, who opened the event and Retford mayor, Coun Anthony Tromans'.

As well as the usual array of stalls, a bouncy castle helped to keep younger visitors entertained while the Whitwell Brass Band supplied a variety of musical numbers to keep feet a-tapping.

To celebrate the movement's 100th birthday, a special marquee was erected to illustrate Scouting Through the Ages.

"This proved to be a popular attraction, particularly among our local vistors," added Gillian.

With a Pirates and the Caribbean theme, the colourful event proved to be a popular way to welcome in the warmer weather.
