Retford gardens have wow factor

THE owners of some of Retford's best kept and presented gardens congregated at Retford Town Hall for the annual prize giving ceremony.

In spite of this summer's bad weather, local gardeners rose to the challenge, making sure their contribution to making the town more atrractive was as strong as ever.

"Last year we had a heatwave, this year we have had floods to contend with, but the standard has been as a high as ever, with some gardens even reaching and exceeding the wow factor," said Garden Competition co-ordinator, Maggie Battersby.

"Judging took place during the first week in July and the floods and heavy rain made some aspects difficult and allowances had to be made."

"After walking around in wellingtons and with umbrellas held high we realised, in spite of the weather, just how much work had been put in by residents determined to make their homes so appealing from the road."

This year the contest took on a slightly different format and instead of prizes in just one category up for grabs, entries in four seperate sections were also hoping to catch the judges' eyes.

These categories for 2007 were: Seasonal Bedding; Year Round Interest; Young Persons offerings; Commercial large and small premises; and the Public House Shield.

Winners this year were:

Category One - Seasonal Bedding, Mr and Mrs Brown, 12 Park Lane.

Category Two - Year Round Interest, Mrs V. Fearn, 30 Queen Street.

Category Three - Young Persons Garden, St Joseph's RC School, Babworth Road.

Category Four - Commercial (large). Morrisons Car Park, Commercial (small). The Bay Tree.

The Public House Shield - Ye Olde Sun.

Two of the entries, St Joseph's RC School on Babworth Road and 12 Park Lane have gone forward to the next stage in the East Midlands in Bloom contest, which will be judged later in the year.

On behalf of Retford Civic Society, Mrs Battersby said she would like to thank everyone who had contributed to the success of the competition in what was a difficult year for gardeners.

"We are also very grateful to Retford Lions, who so generously support the event year after year," she said.

"And our thanks also go to Wilkinsons, Retford and Gainsborough Garden Centre at Saundby, Morrisons and Thompson and Morgan Seeds for providing prizes for the runners-up.

"We would also like to say a big thank you to the judges and also the gardeners of Retford who give so much pleasure to all who walk past."

She added: "Not everyone can win a prize, but in a sense the whole community is a winner as the floral displays brighten up all our lives and neighbourhoods, showing we take pride in our environment,"

"Perhaps that is why we have a Civic Society committee called Retford Pride."
