Professional footballer jailed for death crash

A PROFESSIONAL footballer who had been using his mobile phone before killing a 77-year-old Retford man in car crash has been jailed for two and a half years

Adam Chapman, 20, of Hillview Crescent, Clarborough, was man of the match for Oxford United when they won the Blue Square Premier play-off at Wembley on 16th May.

He admitted causing the death of Thomas Bryan by driving dangerously on the A620 Gainsborough Road near North Wheatley in May last year.

Chapman was driving a Vauxhall Corsa in the head on collision with Mr Bryan's Honda Civic.

Mr Bryan's front seat passenger was 74-year-old Glenys Bloomer.

The court heard they had been romantically linked 60 years ago before each had married, and after their partners had died they had met up again and become inseparable for the past six years.

Chapman told the police the sun had been in his eyes and he had reached for the visor but missed it. Later he accepted he had been using his Blackberry up to three minutes before the crash when he was on the wrong side of the road.

Judge John Milmo said the internet connection was still live.

He added "It may be he was drafting or reading a text at the time, we don't know."

Chapman was also disqualified from driving for five years.
