Police dog handler to face trial over death of animals during heatwave

A POLICE dog handler appeared in court this week accused of causing unnecessary suffering to two German Shepherd dogs.

Pc Mark Johnson, 39, denied the charge when he appeared before Nottingham magistrates on Monday and a trial date has been set for 22nd-25th February next year.

He is accused of leaving his dogs to die as he visited Sherwood Lodge in Arnold on 30th June - one of the hottest days of the year.

The incident made national newspaper headlines and prompted outrage among animal lovers.
