Penguins from Space in Carlton

Saying hello to the emperor

Saying hello to the emperor

Eminent scientist Peter Fretwell, who was born and bred in Carlton, will return home this month to give a talk entitled Penguins from Space.

Former Portland pupil Peter recently published a series of papers on using satellite imagery to find and count emperor penguins in Antarctica.

This was the first time a whole species had been counted from space and made global headlines from BBCS News ar Ten and New Scientist to Time Magazine, National Geographic and the Wall Street Journal.

Peter will explain how his satellite imagery study culminated in almost doubling the previous popultation estimate, as well as showing some of his photographs of emperor penguins from his visits to Antarctica.

Peter, whose parents still live in Carlton, is a Geographic Information Scientist at British Antarctic Survey, whose role involves mapping, remote sensing and geographic analysis of a wide range of environmental data across Antarctic - from glaciers to geology and ecology.

The talk will be held at Carlton Methodist Church on High Road at 7pm on Friday 15th March.

Tickets for the event are priced £5 adults, £4 students and include refreshments. To purchase in advance, call John on 01909 730155.
