Kids learn about the Second World War

Pupils at Ranby House School have recently begun a study of the powerful Second World War story The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Year 7 students discussed the Kindertransport programme, which resulted in over 10,000 Jewish children from across occupied Europe, travelling to relative safety in Britain.

Teacher Mrs Wilkinson challenged the pupils to imagine they were a Jewish child going on the next Kindertransport train.

The first group, consisting of six pupils, were sent home with a suitcase to pack for the journey.

The focus was to consider their practical, personal and emotional needs, said an organiser.

Mrs Wilkinson asked parents to participate, putting themselves in the position of parents in 1939.

“The pupils involved were encouraged to invite their parents in to take part in the lesson, watch the presentations and share their children’s learning experience,” said Mrs Wilkinson.

“It proved to be a very moving experience for all of those who took part.”
