Name musuem's new craft centre

Exciting renovation work at Bassetlaw Museum is nearing completion.

And with it comes a special invitation for primary school children across Bassetlaw to dream up a winning name for the venue's new Craft Centre.

The district council is calling for innovative entries that reflect the rich and varied history of Bassetlaw, to be commemorated in the museum which has undergone a 850,000 year-long refurbishment programme.

The winning entrant will have the honour of naming the room as well as receiving a plaque forever marking their contribution and a special goodie bag.

They will also be invited as a guest of honour to the official opening on Saturday 21st June and have a commemorative photo taken on the day.

Museum curator, Sam Glasswell, said the competition was a great way of getting involved in an exciting time for the new and revamped museum.

"Bassetlaw has got a fascinating history and what has really stood out for me is that there have been some extremely fabulous and varied finds," she said.

"The museum is set in a very beautiful 18th century town house, and some of the decorations have been restored to back the 1800s, so people can see what it was like to be a rich person back then."

The new Craft Centre – part of the museum's new Rural Heritage Centre bulding – will be used to promote the district's rural links, but special attention has also been paid to Retford and Worksop's industrial heritage from glass refractories to the Maltings site in the main museum.

There are also displays centered around various themes from childhood toys throughout the ages and archaeology galleries through to famous Bassetlaw photographers – ensuring there will be something to suit all ages and tastes.

The venue's Victorian School Room is also ideal for visiting school parties, where school children can learn about education in that era and even write on old-fashioned slates with chalk.

Sam said that the six-strong museum team have been working hard for several years to put the displays together, while the main renovation work – funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, WREN, and Bassetlaw Council, has been taking place.

"It is really exciting to see the new displays coming together and everyday is completely different," she said. "The museum's official opening will coincide with our Farm and Country Festival on 21st and 22nd June, and there will be loads of different things going on."

To be in with the chance of seeing your name up in lights at Bassetlaw Museum, send your name idea, address and contact details to The Worksop Guardian, 21-27 Ryton Street, Worksop S80 2AY or Bassetlaw Museum, Amcott House, 40 Grove Street, Retford, DN22 6LD.
