MP welcomes A1 bridge scheme for Elkesley
A £7.5m scheme to improve access for Elkesley residents has been welcomed by Bassetlaw MP John Mann.
The work, which is scheduled to begin in 2010, has been announced by the Highways Agency.
Safety for Elkesley residents is set to be improved by the scheme, which includes new side roads, a bridge, associated slip roads and the diversion of a local road as well as extensive planting to reduce the environmental impact of the scheme.
Mr Mann was particularly pleased to see that the Highways Agency has responded to the issue that he raised directly with and acted on local concerns over increased traffic on Coalpit Lane and Pepperley Rise.
"Over the years Elkesley residents have faced health and safety risks every time they leave or return to the village and this has been impounded by the recent road improvements on the A1," said Mr Mann.
"I am therefore delighted that the campaign for the bridge has been won, this will improve life dramatically."
"This news is particularly good as the Highways Agency have listened to local views and ensured that the new bridge will not cause an increase in traffic travelling through the village."
