Mayor of Rotherham visits Anston Brook

Youngsters at a local primary school enjoyed a visit from some very important guests recently.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham Coun David Pickering and his wife Sue popped into Anston Brook Primary School to help them learn all about the town and the jobs they do.
“The visit came about as we were learning all about Rotherham and the people who help us,” said year two teacher Charlotte Dixon.
“So we invited the mayor and mayoress in to talk about their role within Rotherham and what they do to help others through their charity work.”
“They talked about everything from what their roles involve day to day, how you become a mayor, and about all the different types of people they meet along the way,” she added.
The class of year two children were fascinated to learn all about the role of the mayor and mayoress.
And as well as finding out all about the mayor’s role and duties, they also got the chance to hold the mayoral chains and check out the special car they travel around in.
At the end of their visit they were all presented with special badges to show that they had met the mayor.
“The children all absolutely loved the visit and found it all really fascinating,” continued Miss Dixon.
“They couldn’t believe that out of all the schools in Rotherham the mayor and mayoress had come to see them.”
“They had just read a story about the mayor’s jewels being stolen so when they got to hold the mayoral chains they were really excited.”
“And they were all very excited that they got to go outside and see the car. They have been talking about it ever since.”
The visit was part of a wider project which started at the school in September with each year group learning about a different aspect of their local area, from their local communities and school to Rotherham and beyond.
“Earlier in the year we had been on a visit to Rotherham and went to the town hall where the mayor and mayoress work, so the visit a few weeks later was the icing on the cake for the children,” added Miss Dixon.
