Light up with Bing and Bong

RETFORD is all set to get turned on as kiddies television favourites Bing and Bong arrive to start Christmas celebrations in style.
The visit to the town by the interplanetary stars to switch on the Christmas lights is one of the highlights promised at this year's event on Tuesday.
"This is one of the public's favourite days on the town's calendar," said Retford Christmas Lights committee spokesman Graham Hobbs.
"It always attracts crowds of visitors all eager to get in the Christmas mood and we expect this year to be no different."
"Every year many people put in a lot of work to make sure the evening is a success and we are hoping this year's switch-on will be as spectacular as in previous years."
One of the town's major events, the light-up never fails to bring in the crowds in their thousands all anxious to get a dose of festive fun Retford style.
As in previous years the day will be starting early with a Christmas market open for 10am.
This will be an ideal opportunity to get those last minute gifts and is just one of the attractions lined up for visitors.
A children's fun-fair is also on the cards as well as festive carol singing, a brass band and a children's school choir.
And Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without the chairman's address and the traditional blessing from one of Retford's local vicars.
And the Retford Guardian Roadshow will also be in the Square sharing the stage with Trax FM and the Retford Times, playing all the songs that everyone expects to hear.
To make sure everyone gets a chance to see Bing and Bong, the furry favourites who have left their Home Planet behind, will join a procession along Carolgate on their way to the roadshow.
There, they will then be joined by local dignitaries as they get ready to light up the Christmas tree and the lights around the Market Square at 7pm.
But even then the fun won't be over as the road show is set to continue until 7.45pm, with the roads being re-opened to traffic just before 8pm.
"Christmas is a wonderful time of the year," added Mr Hobbs.
"What better way of starting your celebrations than getting in the mood in your home town. It looks like being a great evening."
