It all goes swimmingly!
A MEDICAL professor who has helped to shape mental health services in the borough has retired.
Malcolm Peet, a consultant psychiatrist and research adviser for Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), retired on 11th January.
Based at Swallownest Court in Swallownest, he joined mental health services in Rotherham in 1999.
He was medical director of the former Rotherham Priority Health Trust until 2001, before deciding to return to full time clinical work.
Prof Peet has played a pivotal role in leading the development and modernisation of mental health services, which included setting up and developing the new national service framework specialist teams.
Dr Riadh Abed, RDaSH’s former medical director, said it had been a ‘great privilege’ to work with him.
“Malcolm can look back with great satisfaction at the legacy he leaves at the trust for a range of services that will continue to provide high quality treatment to patients for years to come,” he said.
“It has been a great privilege for many of us to have worked closely with Prof Peet.”
Dr Nav Ahluwalia, the trust’s current medical director, has known Prof Peet for 20 years.
He said: “He has always been a gifted teacher, trainer and researcher.
“He was one of the first consultants to advocate a team approach to treating individuals with mental health problems.”
“This is now the norm in every town and city in the country. His patients and work colleagues will miss a dedicated consultant who combines intelligence with a great sense of humour.”
