Hero husband saves wife's life

A CRESWELL grandfather who gave his wife the kiss of life when she collapsed at home has been hailed a hero.

Quick-thinking Ron Brazier, 70, of Hazelby Road, was thanked this week by his four children and six grand-children for saving the life of his wife Josie.

"If it wasn't for him, she wouldn't be alive today, and we just wouldn't have been able to think about celebrating Christmas without her," said daughter Kim, 29.

Ron was chatting to his son Troy on the afternoon of Friday 6th November when Troy heard a shout of 'Oh no' and heard his mum fall off the end of her bed.

Rushing to her side, father and son realised she wasn't breathing and

first aider Ron began compressions on her chest while Troy phoned 999 on his mobile.

"The way he just got on with doing compressions, it was if he had done it every day of his life," said Troy, 36.

Ex-miner Ron went into auto-pilot and calmly carried out CPR on his motionless wife until the paramedics arrived.

"I saw she was starting to go blue so I blew twice into her mouth."

"The ambulance crew told me to keep going with the compressions until they'd set up their equipment."

When they took over and rushed Josie, 62, off to Bassetlaw Hospital,

Ron described himself as 'shattered' but 'relieved'.

The next day, doctors told the family that Ron's efforts had saved Josie's life and she had suffered from a collapsed lung.

"I've got Josie to thank really. She used to kick me out of bed on a Sunday and make me go and train with the St John Ambulance."

"Before Friday, I'd never done much more than bandage a finger, or put on a splint – I've never even dealt with a broken bone before."

"But I would like to thank everyone at Shirebrook and Creswell who trained me with first aid skills and I'm so pleased I learnt what I did."

Speaking from her bed on the Coronary Care Unit ward at the Kilton Hill hospital, Josie – who needs regular oxygen as a result of previous heart problems – is recovering well.

"I couldn't remember anything about Friday and I couldn't believe it when they told me what happened," she said.

"It's amazing really and now I'm feeling absolutely fine and will hopefully be ready to go home in the next few days."

The couple's daughter Kim along with brothers Scott, Troy and Lloyd nominated Ron for a Guardian Rose community award to thank him for bringing Josie back to life.

"Thank you isn't really enough but I don't know what way we can ever really thank him for what he did," said Kim.

"We rely on our mum for so much. She loves all her grand-children and she's always there for all of us and now we can all enjoy Christmas together."

She added: "Staff at Bassetlaw Hospital have been brilliant. They just can't do enough for her and I think they probably deserve a Rose award as well."
