Flying flag at 1940s celebration

A TRIP back in time transformed Harworth Miners' Welfare into a 1940s evening and proved that the Blitz spirit is still going strong.

The Whitehouse Road club was adorned with union flags and tunes rang out of a Christies’ organ at the night, which raised 800 for the Poppy Appeal.

”It was an absolutely brilliant success and completely sold out,” said Brian Letherland, Harworth and Bircotes town councillor.

”Everyone worked really hard to make the night work and it was a totally community-based event.”

Bassetlaw MP John Mann even tried his hand at bingo calling and a singer sang classic songs, including The White Cliffs of Dover.

He added: ”There was also a brilliant turn out this week for our Remembrance day service, both on Remembrance Sunday and on Wednesday.”
