College begins 100 in 100 challenge

Rotherham College of Arts and Technology has enrolled its first apprentice in its chalenge to recruit 100 apprentices in 100 days.

Lewis Soley, 16, is being employed by Active Moulds, a specialised manufacturing company in Dinnington, and will receive training over the next four years from the college.

And Active Moulds is already feeling the benefits of taking on an apprentice. Not only is the company training Lewis to suit its needs, it will benefit from a mentoring course the college is offering to employers who take on apprentices.

The company has also qualified for the £1,500 Apprenticeship Grant for Employers.

After studying engineering at school, Lewis opted to get hands-on-experience and start earning through an apprenticeship.

He said: “It’s been fantastic. I’ve learnt so much in my first week.”

After completing his apprenticeship and getting a nationally recognised qualification, Lewis will have the option to study a Higher Education qualification at the college.

Active Moulds manager, Darren Soley, added: “Being a rapidly growing company, we’ve recognised the problem of a skills gap arising and decided the only way forwards is to take on apprentice.

“It’s all about investing in the future.”
