Campaign to combat winter burglaries rise
AN ARMY of intelligence gatherers is being recruited across Worksop in a bid to reduce burglaries this winter.
Refuse collectors, midwives and postal workers will be working with the police in the Seen It? Report it! campaign, which is thought to be the first of its kind in the country.
The Guardian has teamed up with Worksop Police for a series of articles to help beat the burglar and combat the rise in burglaries at this time of year.
Detectives have handed out free pocket notebooks and pens to those that work unsociable hours and asked them to record any suspicious activity
Det Chf Insp Simon Firth said: “The idea behind the campaign came from officers in Bassetlaw who saw the massive potential in this group of people who are out and about in the hours when crime is most likely to be committed.”
”These people are the eyes and ears of our communities, at times when most people are probably in bed.”
Leaflets, posters, business cards and a billboard in Manton – a hotspot area for burglary – have also been produced as part of the campaign.
David Hunter, Bassetlaw Council’s chief executive who chairs the Community Safety Partnership, said: “Stopping crime isn’t only the responsibility of the police and other law enforcement officials.”
“Effective policing depends upon reliable information about the people who actually commit offences or seem to be thinking about doing so.”
