Editor’s Comment: Worksop needs its magistrates’ court

Worksop Magistrates Court

Worksop Magistrates Court

News that the future of Worksop Magistrates’ Court is under threat is deeply worrying.

Not too long ago Bassetlaw had two courts, soon it could be left with none.

This would be disastrous.

There have been courts in this town for the best part of a 1,000 years.

Local justice is a cornerstone of a civilised democracy.

This should not be lost in the name of bureaucratic penny pinching.

Courts proceedings are open, public hearings where justice must be seen to be done.

Those who commit crimes here should face justice here. It’s as simple as that.

The logistics of shipping defendants down to Mansfield and Nottingham will prove problematic.

People will be less likely to turn up at court.

There will be less deterrent to those who commit crime.

This is yet another example of Worksop and its people being treated as second rate.

I urge anyone who has an interest in local justice and democracy to speak out against the downscaling and closure of Worksop Magistrates’ Court before it is too late.
