It is worrying that Tesco does not seem to be consulting with local people or councillors about its plans for the Carlton Road site.

The seemingly endless saga of whether the supermarket giant would or would not be building a new store ended when bosses pulled the plug in January.

Many felt it was the wrong place for a big supermarket but leaving things as they are is not an option

But what now happens to the vacant site - a derelict, overgrown eyesore right on the edge of the town centre - could end up being an equally drawn out process.

In this week’s Guardian it is revealed that Reesdenton Chartered Surveyors is advertising the land for sale on behalf of Tesco.

But the company is giving little away about what could end up on the land - with development for retail, residential or leisure uses or a discount foodstore all said to be possibilities. And what is more, the company does not seem to be engaging with local people on what they want to see on the site.

Even Bassetlaw Council leader Simon Greaves has admitted to being in the dark about their plans.

Given the site’s important location close to the town centre shops, train station and college, it is vital that development takes place - and as soon as possible. Many felt it was the wrong place for a big supermarket but leaving things as they are is not an option.
