There were shocking scenes in Worksop town centre on Saturday, as a disabled woman and her assistance dog were attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier.

It must have been a terrifying experience, and fortunately brave members of the public were able to intervene and get the dog off before more damage was done.

Worryingly, these sorts of attacks seem to becoming increasingly common.

Attacks like these are not the fault of the dogs, the blame lies purely on the shoulders of the owners.

Owning a dog is a big responsibility, but unfortunately there are dog owners out there who are just not up to the task.

These irresponsible people who cannot keep their animals in check should not be allowed to keep dogs, it is as simple as that.

Some people see certain breeds of dog as some sort of status symbol, rather than an animal that needs love, attention, and discipline.

It is time the authorities started to seriously clamp down on this issue, before we have any more serious attacks on people and other pets.
