Armed police swooped on a Dinnington street on Thursday night as residents watched on.
South Yorkshire Police said they were called to Doe Quarry Lane at 7.35pm on 29th May.
It is not yet clear what caused the robust response.
But two people were later arrested for wasting police time.
The 43-year-old Dinnington man and 20-year-old North Anston man are still being questioned by detectives.
Onlookers saw police officers getting their kit on outside the Co-op store on Outgang Lane, Laughton, before swooping on the scene.
Ten police cars and two police vans were said to have descended at the scene.
One witness said they had been ‘all over the common’.
