Cottam power station has won an award for its vision to make the plant water neutral, returning every litre of water the plant uses to the environment.

Cottam’s production manager Martin Cheetham and day production co-ordinator Stuart Noble received the One to Watch award at a ceremony in Peterborough, organised and hosted by Anglian Water Business.

The regional commercial water supplier’s second annual We Love What You Do Business Awards recognised companies that are protecting the environment and helping secure the future of the East of England.

Cottam is working with Anglian Water Business to explore whether it is possible to return every litre of water the plant uses to the environment, effectively making operations ‘water neutral’. The project is in the feasibility stage and among the aspects of the generation process being looked at are whether effluent water from Cottam’s boilers can be better reused.

Martin Cheetham said: “As a company, environmental and sustainability considerations are key drivers in our business strategy.”

“For Cottam, our vision was to significantly reduce raw water usage, as well as implementing other initiatives that would have wider environmental benefits. This is an ambitious project and we hope that, if successful, we can replicate at other sites, helping to reduce the environmental impacts of power generation.”

Bob Wilson, managing director of Anglian Water Business, said: “It’s great to see so many businesses and public sector organisations who recognise their environmental responsibility as a commercial opportunity.”
