A teenager stole hundreds of pounds worth of candles on two separate occasions after her relationship with her boyfriend ended, a court heard.
Chanell Bown, 19, of Crown Street, Clowne, pleaded guilty to both offences at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Friday 13th February.
The court heard that Bown stole Yankee Candles from Beales PLC on 12th December 2014 worth £204 and on 8th January 2015 worth £160.
On the first occasion a security guard was made aware of a possible theft. The CCTV was checked and it showed Bown take the candles, which were never recovered.
On the second occasion, Bown was seen outside Beales PLC with the candles and was followed. Bown then ‘rolled back’ the candles back to the store when she was approached. In mitigation, Simon King told the court it was a series of events that led to the thefts, including breaking up with her boyfriend.
“He had been unfaithful to her,” Mr King said.
Bown moved back home but got involved with taking legal highs and was asked to move out by her mother. She also missed a JSA appointment which led to her being given a three-month benefit sanction.
Mr King added that Bown has said that being caught was ‘very frightening’.
The case was adjourned until 5th March for sentencing.
