More than £23,000 was spent on Christmas lights for the big festive switch-on in Worksop, it can be revealed.

A Freedom of Information request to Bassetlaw District Council found that £23,589 was spent on buying, installing and obtaining the relevant licences for the festive lights alone.

Other costs included £875 for a fake snow machine and £415 on a Christmas tree, including transport.

However, the total cost of the big switch-on to the council was less than in 2014, with £30,160 being spent, compared to £27,644 in 2015.

David Armiger, director of regeneration and neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “This is the first year that we have entered into a partnership with the business forums for both Worksop and Retford, who were involved at every stage of the organisation and made many of the decisions around the style of the Christmas lights as well as entertainment, events and attractions at the switch-on events in both towns.

“While the financial contribution from the council was slightly less than last year, the business forum was also able boost this offer with their own festive contributions, which in Worksop saw Christmas trees placed on the walls of many of the town centre businesses.”

The big switch-on took place at Market Square on Saturday, November 21.

The breakdown of the costs show that £350 went on road closures, £275 to St John Ambulance, £200 on marketing, £1,100 on entertainment/PA equipment, £840 on security, £415 on the Christmas tree including transport and £23,589 on the lights.

Philip Jackson, chairman of the Worksop Business Forum, said: “The Christmas light switch-on event was a tremendous success.

“Many of the organisations taking part did so for the love of the town without any payment, in areas where costs were incurred we felt that we had tremendous value for money.

“The whole event was fantastic and well supported. Some visitors stated it was the best event for some time. I would like to thank everybody involved.”
