Cranes will slow traffic

work to fit new beams on the Balby New Bridge finally gets under way this weekend.

The works had originally been planned for earlier this month, but were delayed due to engineering difficulties outside the control of Doncaster Council.

The crane lifts will require at least four, and up to seven, consecutive weekends of outbound closures over the bridge.

Traffic management measures and diversions will take effect from 10am on Saturdays through to 6am the following Monday.

Outbound traffic will be diverted in a contraflow arrangement onto the inbound carriageway, resulting in significant delays both into and out of town.

With ongoing gas works taking place seven days a week along the A630 Balby Road, motorists are advised to use alternative routes into Doncaster such as junctions 37 and 38 on the A1(M).

Two 500-ton mobile cranes will be working in tandem to lift out the weak beams and fit new beams to strengthen the bridge.
