THANKS to the Retford Trader Guardian readers and kind-hearted Retford residents, 86-year-old Walter Farrand is back in the saddle once more.
Last week’s paper reported how the Second World War veteran was lost without his beloved bike after it was stolen from the centre of town.

But surprise, surprise, just a few days ago, Walter received a phone call from a Mrs Hancock saying she had seen it leaning up against the wall of a local undertakers.

“I was absolutely thrilled to have it back again. People see me out and about every day, but I didn’t look the same without my bike,” he said.

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone for their kindness and good wishes, and also staff at the Retford Trader Guardian who realised how I felt and did their best to help.”

Having got his bike back has made Walter more security conscious. and he has resolved to always lock it whenever he leaves it.”

“I think that my situation touched a soft spot with local people, and I think they will be happy to learn that there are some caring people in town after all,” he added.
