"I AM honoured to represent this town" – the words of Wendy Quigley, who has taken office as Retford's new mayor.
After a year as Bassetlaw Council's chairman, Coun Quigley has swapped one chain for another and is looking forward to taking on her mayoral duties.

"There are so many talented people in Retford. I've just never known a place like it," she said.

This is the third time she has taken on the role of Retford mayor, having also worn the chain of office in 1993 and 1999.

At the mayor-making ceremony at the town hall last Wednesday, the mayoral chains were officially handed over to Coun Quigley from outgoing Retford mayor, Anthony Tromans.

In a speech at the ceremony, the new mayor praised many of the town's groups and charities, including the Retford Lions, the Rotary Club, Retford Pride and the Civic Society.

"I'm very proud to support all the charity organisations we have here, and all the work they do. There are so many dedicated people working for the community and they all deserve some recognition."

"Young people often get a bad press, but we have some really involved young people in the area. I'm hoping to get some school pupils to come on a visit to Retford Town Hall so they can learn a bit more about the council."

One of the charities Coun Quigley supported in her role as Bassetlaw Council chairman was the Bassetlaw Hospice.

"I will continue to support the hospice as mayor, because it is somewhere that does so much for so many people within the district."

Giving special mention to Retford's Majestic Theatre, she said: "Without the volunteers at the theatre, we wouldn't have this fantastic place."

Looking forward to her year in office, she spoke of what she says will be the highlights of the year ahead.

"I lay a wreath on Remembrance Day and inspect members of the parade including the Royal British Legion and the scouts and guides. It's a day that is very important to me."

"I love meeting people and getting a smile from them, so I really enjoy all the public events I go to in these roles."
