A SCHEME that helps bring extra vital services to older people's homes in Bassetlaw has celebrated its first birthday.
Retford-based First Contact, which was launched on 27th February last year, has helped over 900 over 60s in Bassetlaw receive services to keep them safe and independent in their own homes.

Run by Retford Action Centre, the scheme is funded by Nott
s County Council and other partners.

"I am delighted to host the First Contact project as it enhances the work we do delivering services for older people in Bassetlaw," said Lynn Tupling, manager of the Retford Action Centre.

"These include the resource centre and community outreach advisor and the Bassetlaw Community Car Scheme. The WRVS home from hospital scheme is also based at the Retford Action Centre, which means there are a range of projects for older people all housed under one roof, helping older people remain independent for longer."

First Contact staff visit the homes of the over 60s and carry out checklists, which ask questions about issues including fire safety and home security checks, and offer confidential advice about any money the householder may be entitled to.

Householder responses to the checklist are fed back to one central contact point, where staff will co-ordinate the responses of partner organisations.

A representative from the organisation then contacts the older person to discuss what might be available.

"I am really happy to be involved with First Contact, not only because of the number of people that have benefited, but particularly the real difference it has made to their lives," added Lynn Tupling.

The First Contact scheme has been developed with partners including Bassetlaw Council, A1 Housing, Notts Police and the Pension Service.

"In its first year, First Contact has helped over 900 people receive 1,700 extra services they may not have otherwise known about," said Coun Alan Rhodes, cabinet member for adult services and health at Notts County Council.

"By bringing these services directly into older people's homes, we're helping them to be safer and increasing the chances of them being able to live independently at home for longer."
