NEARLY 500 people dressed in black ties and glamorous gowns galloped into Ye Olde Bell for the annual Grove and Rufford Hunt Ball.

One guest, in particular, stood out from the crowd when he turned up dressed as a huntsman in top hat and tail coat, similar to the one featured in a mural on the hotel’s staircase.

Paul Piddington, owner of Vale of York Polo Club at Misson, is one of the few members to hunt locally, said a hotel spokesman.

He managed to raise more than £2,500 for Help For Heroes, with John Burnett, who put him up to the challenge, donating the first £250 for the charity.

The mural was painted by local artist Mary Daw. She was commissioned by Paul and Hilary Levack to paint the mural at Ye Olde Bell, as they wanted to leave a legendary mark of their custodianship of the hotel for guests to enjoy for generations to come.
