the eagerly-awaited Worksop Music Festival has been cancelled amid wrangling between organisers and Bassetlaw Council.
Music fans will not be able to see the likes of Suzi Quatro or Dr and The Medics storm the stage at Worksop Town Football Club in the two-day extravaganza, which was scheduled to take place between 14th and 15th June.

Bassetlaw Council’s lack of consent to the event means festival-goers will have to seek their music fix elsewhere this summer.

Tickets for the event went on sale last year after entertainment company 1861 Leisure announced the impressive festival line-up in October last year, featuring an array of blues, indie, pop and rock acts.

Roy Wood of The Move and Wizzard fame was due to headline the Saturday show, appearing alongside Dr and the Medics, Herman’s Hermits and the Earl Jackson band.

Acts tipped for the following day were Aslan, Craine and singer-songwriter Charlie Barker – all headlined by glam rock star Suzi Quatro.

Clive Jackson, lead singer in Dr and the Medics, said he was extremely disappointed that the plug had been pulled on the festival.

”We had been contracted to play at the festival since August last year and were looking forward to playing in Worksop,” he said. ”This is bad news and I am sorry that it has been cancelled at such short notice.”

The festival looked set to go ahead as many boxes were ticked early on, including the premises licence which was granted on 24th July last year.

But with concerns raised by Worksop Town Football Club over the potential effects a festival would have on the football pitch, Bassetlaw Council – which owns the ground – has now pulled out of the deal.

A council spokesman said that under the lease of the football ground to 1861 Leisure, any activity carried out at the ground requires council consent.

“The council is anxious to ensure that any activity at the ground of a non-sporting nature does not prejudice the continuance of football, or affect the playing surface, at the start of the 2008/2009 season,” he said.

“Any non-sporting activity would therefore require the consent of all interested parties concerned. We wish the football club every success in the up-and-coming season.”

Howard Raymond, who owns 1861 Leisure – which includes the Tigers clubhouse – said he was extremely disappointed that after months of planning, the festival was not going to go ahead.

“It’s a real shame that landlord’s consent was not given and that the people of Worksop are going to miss out on some fun this summer," he said.

“The sole aim of the festival was to raise money for the club. Unfortunately this is not going to happen now.”

But he was keen to reassure people who had bought tickets – £26 – £39.50 – for the concert would have their money fully refunded in due course.

“We have sold several thousands of tickets” he said.

“But there is no need for people who have bought festival tickets to worry – they will have their money returned within the next two weeks.”
