Stories from the villages of Bawtry, Finningley, Tickhill and Misterton for the week ending 9th January 2009.

BAWTRY

Council meeting

Residents of Bawtry who want to put across their point of view are invited to attend the next meeting of Bawtry Town Council, which will be in the New Hall, Bawtry at 7pm on Tuesday 13th January.

FINNINGLEY

Council to try again for Quality Status:

Finningley Parish Council has failed in its recently submitted bid to secure Quality Council status, after it did not come up to the required standard in some of the tests set, including training, democracy and citizenship.

Although councillors questioned the advantages of Quality status because Doncaster Council has not yet signed up to the principles, Coun Richard Johnson said: "It is a benchmark and a standard and the council should try to reach the standard.

If there are areas on which we have failed, we should try to put them right." Councillors agreed to make a further attempt to satisfy the criteria to become a Quality Council.

Pond clean-up

Finningley village pond, which has no flowing water but is home to hundreds of ducks, has become contaminated.

Finningley Parish Council, which is responsible for the pond's upkeep, has periodically removed debris from the pond, but a thorough clean-up is required, and the council fear that the cost may run into five figures.

Some residents have complained about the state of the green which surrounds the pond and the practice of cars parking on the area.

One resident recently accused the council of letting the pond deteriorate to something resembling "a watering hole in Africa".

The council hope to construct a roadway across the green to accommodate service vehicles, and have blamed the lack of action on the delay in getting quotes for cleaning out the pond.

WEST STOCKWITH

Murder at the village hall

Budding detectives should gather at West Stockwith Village Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 16th January when It All Adds Up will present a Murder Mystery Evening.

For a cost of 5, prospective sleuths can test their skills and have a pie and pea supper.

Those wanting liquid refreshment should take a bottle.

TICKHILL

Trio in concert

The Abruzzi Trio are the next performers at Tickhill Music Society's concert in St Mary's School at 8pm on Friday 16th January.

Members and non members are welcome to attend and tickets cost 7 for members and 10 for non members.

Anyone who wishes to become a member of the society should contact Rita Reeves on 01302 742448. A season ticket for all the concerts is 50.

Inland rail port explained

Tickhill Resident Association's Public Forum, at 7.30pm on Monday 12th January at Tickhill Pavilion, will have as its invited guest speaker a representative of HeliosSlough, the company which is proposing to construct a 570,000 square metre inland port at Rossington.

The site will extend towards Tickhill in the Stancil area and promises to implement the first part of the link road to the M18, which will eventually link Robin Hood to the motorway system.

The site will consist of rail connected warehousing and would have far reaching consequences for Tickhill if the motorway link was not to be built.

Also at the forum will be Tickhill's community constable as well as Doncaster and Tickhill councillors.

A walk in the park

Clumber Park is the venue for the next walk by Tickhill and District Footpath Group.

The walk will be led by Mick Green and everyone is invited to join him at 1.30pm on Sunday 11th January in the main car park at Clumber Park.

MISTERTON

Vacancy for parish councillor

Misterton Parish Council has appealed for anyone who wishes to offer their services to the council and the community to submit an application for the vacancy for a councillor on the Parish Council.

Applications should be sent to the clerk to the parish council, The Misterton Centre, 31 High Street, by 2pm on Friday 16th January.

The council will be able to co-opt the new councillor and there will be no need to hold an election.

Anyone interested should contact the clerk to the council on 01427 891872 for further information.

Applicants will be invited to an informal interview with councillors. Misterton Parish Council has twice been the top parish council in the country in the national annual Council of the Year awards and is one of the few councils in the country to obtain Quality Status.

Vandalism at Misterton

Of the 21 reported crimes at Misterton in November and December last year seven were for criminal damage.

Burglary accounted for four of the reports and there were eight instances of theft.

Four youths were also reported to have been issued with harassment orders by Notts Police as they continue to crack down on anti social behaviour in the village.

Included in the crimes were the theft of the Parish Council's Christmas lights along with the theft of the Christmas Tree and lights at the Methodist Church and damage to Christmas lights at Misterton Health Centre.

The figures indicate that Misterton has one of the highest crime rates in the rural area of Bassetlaw and the parish council has called for the restoration of a dedicated police community support officer for the village.

Community speedwatch

Notts Police's Community Speedwath could be implemented in Misterton if enough volunteers come forward to form a community speedwatch group.

Community speedwatch, in which volunteers operate speed guns, is designed to deter offenders and monitor traffic speed.

Information about speeding vehicles is passed to the police, who write to offenders in the first instance.

Repeated offences may result in prosecution, and in some locations numerous fixed penalty notices have been issued.

Volunteers are trained by the police and use police enforceable mobile speed guns.

Volunteers should leave their contact details at The Misterton Centre telephone number 01427 891872.
