BAWTRY
Invitation to Valentine celebration:
There will be a chance for couples to celebrate their marriage in true Valentine style at a Valentine service at St Nicholas Church, Bawtry at 7.30pm on Saturday 16th February.
The service will be followed by a finger buffet in the church hall. For further details contact the vicarage on 01302 710298.
Bawtry Whist Club:
Ladies winners at last week's meeting were Helen Scott, Dorothy Taylor and Brenda Naylor. With her mind obviously on other things following her marriage to Joe last week, organiser Elsie Foote could only manage the low score.
Gents winners were Joyce Williams, Graham Hollis and Brian Wilkinson with Hugh Mulligan taking the low score award. Raffle prizes went to Bob Breacher, Jane Barker and Mike Barker.
TICKHILL
Musical night:
Tickhill Residents Association will combine with Thurcroft Theatre Group to present a Night at the Musicals at Tickhill Methodist Church Schoolrooms on Saturday 23rd February at 7.30pm.
Tickets will cost 4 and can be booked by ringing 01302 742696.
Blyth Spirits: Members of Tickhill and District Footpath Group will meet at Blyth village green on Sunday at 1pm for a walk in the Blyth area.
The walk will be led by Eileen McElrue. Everyone is welcome to attend and further details about the group can be obtained from Brian Stevens on 01302 745533.
MISTERTON
Development held up:
Progress on the development of the site on which the Victoria Institute stands at Misterton is being held up because the deeds of the building cannot be found.
Misterton Parish Council, as trustee of the Misterton Trust which owns the building, has been in consultation with Notts County Council about developing the whole of the area around the Victoria Institute to provide a new library and youth facilities as well as housing.
That would mean the disposal of the institute and the parish council has written to previous trustees of the institute, but the deeds cannot be found and that will make sale of the institute a lengthy and cumbersome business.
The council's solicitors have now taken the matter up and are considering their next steps.
The council will, however, press on with plans to dispose of one of the two full size snooker tables in the institute and will offer it for sale.
The council has received better news about its disposal of the village hall, after solicitors in Gainsborough revealed that they had been in possession of the deeds for that building since 1943.
The council now hopes that the sale of the building for which residential planning permission has been obtained can go ahead. Common Land at the old Packett Inn site has not yet been sold with the proposed purchaser still trying to resolve legal difficulties.
In the meantime, Andromeda Trading, which has built houses on the site and which needs the land for access, has arranged a meeting with council members to discuss the situation.
Residents call for safer crossing:
Misterton residents are fed up with risking life and limb while crossing the busy High Street in Misterton and have made a plea for a pedestrian crossing to be installed.
Traffic along High Street, which is an A class road, has increased in recent years and parish councillors are particularly worried about the amount of heavy goods vehicles which use the road.
Councillors agreed at their last meeting that they would write to Notts County Council and ask it to provide a controlled pedestrian crossing.
Misterton Centre goes part time:
Until a new receptionist has been appointed Misterton parish councillors will man the centre on a voluntary basis and the centre will therefore only open on a Wednesday and a Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
Future of social club in doubt:
With the residential development of the former Jenkins Newell site at Misterton, the fate of Misterton Sports and Social Club, which stands on the site, is in doubt.
It had been hoped that as part of planning conditions developers would build a new club on part of Misterton playing field, but that has not worked out and so the club is to undertake a survey of Misterton residents.
The survey seeks their views on their use of Misterton Sports Social Club and their views on its future and has been distributed to many houses in the village. Forms are also available at the club, from The Misterton Centre, or from the library.
The closing date for replies is Friday 29th February.
GRINGLEY
Newsletter declares independence:
Gringley's monthly newsletter, The Beacon, has turned down an offer of 900 funding from the local parish council so that its editorial staff do not appear to be council biased.
The Beacon is distributed at a small cost to most households in the village and the parish council wanted to make the donation so that every household could receive a copy.
But the volunteers who run The Beacon were concerned that if the parish council subsidised The Beacon it might be regarded as a parish council magazine and turned down the offer.
Coun John Hargreaves, chairman of the parish council said: "The editors wish to keep the independence of this fine village institution.
The parish council wanted to see copies circulated to all homes but it must respect the decision and as a parish council encourage everyone in the village to take it."
