Stories from the villages of Bawtry, Misterton and Gringley for the week ending 6th June 2008.

BAWTRY

Borough grant to be spent in town centre:

The remainder of the 500 grant given to Bawtry Town Council by Doncaster Borough Councillors will be spent on providing seating in Doncaster Road and a new litter bin in Dukes Terrace to replace the ones removed by Doncaster Council and on an extra seat in High Street, next to the bus stop at the Northern end of the Town.

Bawtry Whist Club:

Last week's winners at the Bawtry Whist Club meeting included Gladys Dewsnap, Joan Smith and Elsie Foote for the Ladies and Ray Fox, Dennis Mellow and Brian Wilkinson for the Gents.

Low score awards went to Dorothy Taylor and Joyce Williams. Bill Osborne, Doris Littlewood and Graham Hollis were successful in the raffle.

Venue sought for dog show:

The Bawtry Mayflower Dog Sanctuary is seeking a venue to hold its annual Scrufts Dog Show.

The show is normally held at the Sanctuary's own premises at Narrow Lane, Bawtry, but cannot be held there this year because of work on extensions.

The show, which features many of the dogs rescued and re-homed by the Sanctuary, will be held on the first Sunday in July.

Bawtry Town Council has turned down a request to use its Memorial Sports Ground and anyone who can offer the show a home should contact the centre on 01302 711330.

MISTERTON

Fire Fighters wanted:

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue still requires people to help maintain a 24-hour service at Misterton Fire Station.

Being a retained firefighter is an interesting and rewarding way to serve your community and if you live or work within five minutes of Misterton Fire Station and you can spare the time, the fire service would like to hear from you, especially if you could help provide cover during all, or part, of weekdays.

The role could appeal to a shift worker, a night worker, self-employed worker, a home worker, a parent with children in school or someone whose employer would release them during work hours.

Recruitment events are being held at Misterton Fire Station on Wednesday 11th June from 5-8pm and Saturday 14th June from 9am-12 noon.

Anyone wishing to know more about the retained fire service and its training and development opportunities, the entry assessments, the rates of pay or anything else should call in at Misterton Fire Station.

No appointment is required. For further details contact the watch manager Andy Horton on 01427 890275 or 07881 880383. Information is also available from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service on 0115 967 0880 or via the website www.notts-fire.gov.uk

Flower tubs stolen:

Two wooden tubs of plants and flowers placed at the junction of Marsh Lane and Stockwith Road, Misterton by the parish council have been stolen.

It is believed that the tubs were stolen during the last week in May and the council has appealed for anyone with any information about suspicious activity in the area to contact the clerk to the parish council, David Wright, at The Misterton Centre or call 01427 891659.

Council makes village improvements:

Misterton Parish Council agreed to carry out a number of improvements in the village at a meeting of general purposes committee on 27th May.

Two litter bins are to be provided on the sports field, and quotations obtained to replace the concrete path from the car park to the pavilion.

The play equipment at Church Meadow is to be repainted, and consideration given to how the young trees can be protected from vandalism.

The parish council has also agreed to make a small sum of money available to the library to plant the garden areas with summer stock.

Surgery change:

The surgery conducted by district councillor Ray Simpson at The Misterton Centre will now be on Tuesday 10th June between 10.30am and 12 noon.

The A1 Housing surgery will be held at the centre between 10.00am and 12 noon on Wednesday 11th June and the police surgery between 10am and 12 noon on Saturday 14th June.

Parish Council:

The next meeting of Misterton Parish Council will be in the Church Room, Church Lane, Misterton at 7.30pm on Tuesday 10th June.

Everyone is welcome to attend and the public will have a chance to address the Parish Council during the meeting.

GRINGLEY

Chairman stands down:

Coun John Hargreaves has stood down after two years as chairman of Gringley Parish Council. Parish councillor Hugo Dunkley was voted in as chairman at last week's parish council meeting. Coun David Foreman will continue as vice chairman.

Gringley Wharf completed:

The restoration of Gringley Wharf as a leisure and wildlife area has been completed with the erection of an information board.

The area has been excavated and areas of the original wharf uncovered to form a picnic area with wooden benches and table with the help of a grant from Notts County Council's Building Better Communities.

Parish councillor Hugo Dunkley said: "It is a splendid area and I hope it gets used. Thanks are due to all those who were involved in making it happen, the county council including the archaeoligists and members of the public who were involved in the dig."

Binge drinkers at Gringley:

Large amounts of bottles and cans found mainly on the playing fields at Gringley is evidence that young people at Gringley are indulging in binge drinking.

Parish councillors were told that car boots full of bottles were being removed from the playing fields and that there was also evidence of the use of illegal drugs.

The parish council agreed to report the matter to the local police for further enquiries to be made.
