BAWTRY
Land sale may affect RSPCA:
The RSPCA's South Yorkshire Animal Centre at Great North Road Bawtry, which deals among other things with re housing stray and unwanted dogs, has been left wondering whether it will have to move out after learning that Doncaster Council wishes to sell an area of wooded land next to the centre, which is part of the Rossington Hall Estate.
The RSPCA lease on the land runs out in four years time and chairman of the branch George Spencer said: "If this land is sold for housing development it will put a strain on the centre because dogs make a noise and we do not want to upset any neighbours who would obviously be annoyed by the dogs barking. We have not heard anything from Doncaster but with the plans for an eco town at Rossington housing will spread towards Bawtry and that would affect the RSPCA. The RSPCA would like to be given the chance to buy the land."
The RSPCA currently has a 30-year lease and Peter Dale, director of development at Doncaster Council said: "Our appointed consultants are carrying out preliminary research and it is anticipated that the Rossington Hall estate will be on the market in August. We are currently receiving initial enquiries from interested parties. The RSPCA lease will continue under new ownership."
Seeking to reassure the RSPCA about the use of the land Mr Dale said: "Preserving Doncaster's heritage is of high importance to the council and strict planning guidance protects country estates such as Rossington Hall from any detrimental development." The Northern Racing College occupies about half the estate under a 99-year lease and Doncaster Council says that will continue under new ownership as discussions continue with the College about them acquiring new areas of the Estate.
Whist winners:
Joan Smith, Helen Scott and Brenda Naylor were the winners of the Ladies Section at Bawtry Whist Club last Thursday evening. In the Gents Section Will Osborne, Joyce Williams and Elsie Keeble came out on top. Joe Foote took the low score award as did Betty Green for the Ladies, but her luck turned in the raffle where she took home a prize as did Elsie Keeble and Helen Scott.
Council to appoint handyman:
Bawtry Town Council is to interview seven applicants, including a lady, for the job of road sweeper and handyman at Bawtry.
The council has agreed to expand the role of the previous employee, who kept the Market Place and High Street clean and tidy, and will add on a handyman role to keep the town's amenity areas neat and properly maintained.
The job currently extends to 24 hours but councillors at their last general purposes meeting agreed that it may be possible to extend the hours or appoint a further handyman if there is sufficient work.
GRINGLEY
No Broadband for Gringley:
Gringley is one of the few areas in the country which is unable to receive broadband services via the telephone network.
Gringley Parish Council has been trying to resolve the issue for several months and eventually BT has admitted that because of the distance which signals have to travel along the line from the nearest exchange, which is several miles away, there is no prospect of Gringley having a broadband serviced in the near future.
BT maintains that the line is in perfect working order and that it can do nothing more to improve what it admits is a poor broadband service. Now the council is to explore other alternatives such as wireless and satellite connections in order to get Gringley joined up with the world of broadband.
Council funds neighbourhood watch:
Gringley Parish Council has agreed to keep neighbourhood watch going in Gringley by contributing the 1 per household that Bassetlaw Neighbourhood Watch charges for being part of the scheme. The council will pay 250 for the next year's subscription.
School gets new bus:
Life has suddenly got a lot better for the pupils of St Peter's Primary School at Gringley after the school joined together with Misterton Primary School to buy a new 17-seater mini bus.
Since the bus was purchased it has been used for several trips and last week was used to transport pupils on a residential trip to Edale.
Headteacher Mike Sharp said: "The acquisition of this bus has meant that a great deal more class and year sized trips are now possible for our pupils as well as taking them to sporting and educational events."
Detention centre development goes ahead:
Despite cutting back developments in other areas, Miller Homes has assured Gringley Parish Council that it intends to continue with the residential development of the Gringley Detention Centre site, which it purchased from the Home Office.
Gringley Council has an added interest in the site because the developers are committed to providing a new community centre at the site.
Although the latest meeting between Miller Homes and the council's working group was cancelled, work on clearing the site is continuing and councillors are confident that the new cvommunity centre will be built.
